- [특강] Fuzzing Autonomous Vehicles(6/28(수), 14:00)
- ■ Speaker: Chung Hwan Kim Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, The University of Texas at Dallas ■ Title: Fuzzing Autonomous Vehicles ■ Abstract: Autonomous vehicles (AVs), such as drones and self-driving cars, are a type of cyber-physical systems for automated transportation and missions. With their increasing adoption, AVs are facing threats of cyber and cyber-physical attacks that exploit their attack surfaces. Although many AVs are critical to human safety and the environment, it is difficult to make them secure against such attacks due to new challenges that are not addressable by traditional approaches. Many of these challenges originate from a semantic gap between cyber and physical domains in which AV systems operate. In this talk, I will introduce my recent work that bridges the gap to discover and eliminate security vulnerabilities in AV systems. Specifically, I will introduce two fuzz testing (fuzzing) tools that automatically explore the input spaces of (1) drone control systems and (2) self-driving car systems, respectively, to detect hidden vulnerabilities that attackers may exploit to cause critical accidents. I will show how our fuzzing tools (in the cyber domain) generate sensor inputs and monitor vehicle operations (in the physical domain), and discuss unique challenges that we addressed while building these mechanisms. Using our tools, we have discovered ■ Biography: Chung Hwan Kim is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). Before joining UT Dallas in 2020, he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University in 2017 and worked at NEC Labs as a security researcher for three years. His research interest lies in solving security problems in modern computing systems, recently with more focus on cyber-physical systems safety and security. His research seeks to achieve this by developing new tools using program analysis, software testing, and operating/embedded systems techniques. He received the UT Dallas New Faculty Research Symposium Grant Award in 2021. His work has been nominated as a Top 10 Finalist for the CSAW Best Applied Research Paper Award in 2018. He has published more than 20 research papers including 13 top-tier conference papers (e.g., USENIX Security, CCS, and NDSS). - [특강] Attack Surface Reduction through Software Debloating (6/13(화), 10:30)
- ■ Title: Attack Surface Reduction through Software Debloating ■ Abstract: Memory safety vulnerabilities continue to be a major source of system compromise. While our efforts at hardening software have been effective, they are not enough. In this talk, I will show how removing unneeded code and features, referred to as debloating, can be used for software hardening. Software debloating is a promising technique for improving security without incurring any additional overhead. The main challenge in this area of work is to perform a sound analysis that does not mistakenly identify parts of the code that the program requires, as supplementary. While previous works have focused on reducing code at the userspace program level, I will show how we can achieve much better security guarantees by reducing the OS kernel features accessible by the program. Since userspace programs mainly leverage system calls to interact with the kernel, we will discuss how identifying and filtering the unneeded system calls of a userspace program allows us to neutralize previously disclosed Linux kernel vulnerabilities. I will conclude my talk by discussing how we can further reduce the attack surface by gradually transitioning to memory-safe languages. ■ Bio: Seyedhamed Ghavamnia is an incoming Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut. He received his Ph.D. from Stony Brook University where he was advised by Michalis Polychronakis. His research interests lie at the intersection of software security and programming languages. During his Ph.D., Seyedhamed has primarily focused on performing attack surface reduction through software debloating.
